How do you know it's working?

We always start with this question in mind. We fund organisations because of the challenges they work on and the impact they have. Each year we work with a small number of organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand to improve and grow their impact in youth employment, community housing and waste reduction.

We have three funding areas.

Our decision to focus on these areas was informed by data about the socio-economic and environmental challenges faced in Aotearoa New Zealand and the benefits that can be achieved as we strive to address them.

We are proud of our partners
and the incredible mahi they do.

About Hoku Foundation

Hoku Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation. We support organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand to improve and grow their impact in youth employment, community housing and waste reduction.

Each year we work with a small number of organisations and seek out leaders with a growth mindset and who share our aspirations for a high performing charities sector.

We recognise it takes an entire organisation to deliver impact and that our partners know their field of work better than we do. So we seek to learn, align on their outcomes, and fund them flexibly over multiple years.

We also believe that achieving maximum impact requires active management. This means regularly collecting and reviewing data (in all forms), analysing and drawing insights, and using this to make decisions and improvements to strategy and services. We do this ourselves underpinned by our own theory of change. We want to learn about what it takes to be effective across our funding areas and are keen to work with others who can share what’s working and what they are learning.

The Foundation has a big mandate and a very small team. So we do not accept unsolicited proposals. We continue to develop and expand our networks to find organisations that are a good fit and who want to work with us. Our job is to find great organisations and our approach to due diligence is holistic.

Eve Jolly

Foundation Director

I'm dedicated to finding creative ways of using finance to support organisations to grow their impact. Prior to Hoku Foundation, I led the innovation team at Foundation North including its impact investment and participatory grant-making portfolios. I've been a commercial lawyer and social enterprise consultant in Aotearoa New Zealand, and an advocacy strategist for children's rights in Eastern Europe. Over the years I've enjoyed working alongside many inspirational and hard-working people and it's a privilege to continue this with Hoku.

Clemmie Baker

Foundation Manager

I have spent the past decade supporting public, private and not-for-profit organisations to understand, measure and grow their impact. Before joining the Hoku Foundation, I was the Director of Impact Consulting at the Ākina Foundation; a consultant at Social Ventures Australia; and before that a charities and environmental lawyer. I'm experienced in enabling organisations to focus on outcomes; and specific areas of interest include community-led solutions, social return on investment, social procurement and effective philanthropy.
